Getting Website Traffic - Set Your Foundation First

Keywords are the CORE of the internet. Without proper research for keywords you’ll be fighting an uphill battle to remain profitable in business.

I see too many people take 30 minutes to search for keywords and then wonder a year down the line why their business isn’t working on the internet. Okay let’s look at it realistically… If you intend to knock up 100 websites over a month, or you want to start with just one website, the time spent on keyword research should in either situation be at least 25% of the time used in setting up … FACT.

Anything that is the CORE of any business is the ‘core’ for a specific reason … it is the life, the feed, the heart … For Websites the CORE is ‘keywords’ – ‘keyword phrases’ and ‘long tail keywords’ … it is want pumps traffic onto your website. Without a good choice of keywords you’re swimming against the current.

Allow me to illustrate with a short example. If you have a property website in London, New York, Johannesburg, Toronto or Sydney … your keywords shouldn’t just be ‘Property in London’. They should be 100 variations of that phrase … such as, ‘apartments for sale in central London’ – ‘2 bed apartment studio for under £500,000’.

I have several property websites, so I know what works and what doesn’t. But the principle of finding keywords is important in any subject or profession. Groundwork, setting foundations and sewing the seeds; all great analogies for the importance of keywords … NEVER underestimate their value.

Up to the first 500 keywords you’ll probably manage with research. Here is Google’s own free research tool, please just add the prefix http and www : adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal?defaultView=2

That said, some of the best keywords will be the one’s that you discover yourself and understand to be what people choose to type into search engines when they are querying a search. Even special keyword research software will not discover every keyword, as some are beyond computer generation. Although if you are planning on having several websites with all of them having over 500 pages, then keyword software will help.

But for the average Joe, with just a few sites under 500 pages, then researching them yourself is much more profitable.

Another trick that will help prompt ideas is this … when you are on a website, take your curser to an empty place on the webpage and right click, then scroll down to ‘view source’ and click. You’ll get the ‘html’ of that page. At the very top are the meta tags … these are keyword rich … you’ll find the title, the description and their keyword choices. There is little point in copying these words as you’ll be competing against them; if you choose exactly the same keyword they will probably have two years existence behind them to rank better. Such a facility is to generate ideas.

As much as we feel confident that we are searching the right areas, don't put your blinkers on too early. I guess a good analogy would be that of completing a crossword. Isn't it always the case that the few boxes you cannot fill are so obvious you overlook them. This scenario is the same with searching for keywords.

I hope I have stressed the importance of research. The task of research is boring and tedious, but nonetheless essential – inspiration and motivation play a big part in creating your keyword list. In conclusion… the main areas to develop a business or diversify and existing business is in the long tail keywords and phrases. Find a major keyword and explore the potential beneath the surface. May I invite to explore the potential of having a list of 2,500 keywords with over a million views per month? Obama's Influence on Small Business

Politicians are notorious for breaking promises, but in Obama’s defense he does look both sincere and honest. As a ’white’ person I’m all for powerful speeches and words that change the world. I wish him all the best, yet he will be in for a rough ride I am sure.

Martin Luther’s famous quote “… I have a dream … that some day our children will be judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character … “ will be high in his thoughts.

Obama has some big footprints to follow. On November 5th 2008 I hope his wisdom and philosophies transform both the US and the World.

Why is this relevant to ‘Home Based Business?’

For the next two or three month’s there is going to be a frenzy of activity on the internet; with reference to Obama and his methods, speeches and policies. Get your thinking cap on and try and capitalize on it.

The Internets Most Searched Keywords...

When you see the top segment of the most viewed keywords you will be both amazed and surprised, as I was. Cars come before sex; lyrics come before marketing, shoes come before dating and hotels come before Google or Yahoo. Lower down the list we see other interesting anomalies – bmw before free downloads, British before baseball, antivirus before online games and court before cancer.

Top Searched Keywords

Do Cars Come Before Sex?

(Release November 2008) … As a journalist that specializes in ‘Internet Marketing’ I discovered a site that was offering a 2,500 keyword list of the ‘Top Searched Words on The Internet’. At first glance I couldn’t decide whether this was desperation or a very astute piece of business marketing. I applied my usual and trusted formula to determine its merits.

Was it unique? Well I had say both yes and no… No it wasn’t unique as you could get this information for free off the internet. Yet at the same time… Yes it was! You can get 10 or 15 items with a quick search for free, but to compile a list of 2,500 made it unique.

My second question within my formula was, “Did it have value?” To anybody who didn’t have a business or an intended business on the internet the facts within it are useless. To those who are the opposite, who depend on earning a living off the internet this list, is more of an asset than just a ‘list’. Any word that is typed into the search engine query box is what most business people want access to. This 2,500 list is all those searches that have over a million views per month.

My third question, “Was it information people needed?” People would find it interesting, businesses would find it invaluable. A list of 50 would be useful, but you’d have little information to compare it with. This list is 2,500+, which is more than enough to contemplate for years.

My final consideration was, “Has this list a time limit?” Well again, yes and no. Yes because about 5% of the words involved included celebrities, which can be either in favour or out depending on their pranks. The other keywords that may run out of date are the company names and product names that have their lifespan as long as the ‘fad’ lasts. The remaining 95% will remain constant, so the list I had to admit will not have a time limit.

This list was coming out on top with my usual formula. So with an excitement I chose to talk to the website owner and see why this list was produced…

I asked the CEO about his web page - Top Searched Keywords on The Internet- Andy Bolton said, “Week in and week out I was having to explore keywords to determine my next theme in business. So in actual fact I was preparing this list for my own personal use, but when I’d taken a month to compile it I realized its true potential and value. I know the facts within this list are available for free, but unless you have 5 free days at 10 hours per day spare to compile it, you’ll not come close as it is both tedious and time consuming.”

I considered further the lists’ merits… Although I’m not a business person, I’m only just a journalist, I can see why an entrepreneur would enjoy this list to help develop strategies for future promotions. There are nine eventual downloads, some of which are the same list presented in different ways; but more important is the original excel file available for download as well, which is adjustable by columns and items can be deleted and added.

So my final analysis of this Keyword List – is it a desperation measure for an internet business or is it actually a very clever tool? I have no doubt that it is a very clever tool and will a good investment for the astute business person.

Cash Crisis

Yes… I think all internet marketers are feeling the pinch. But diversification is the word to utilise. Rather than sit back and whinge about the down turn we need to see what is active and dip our toes into that market.

Christmas is soon upon us. Every news report however is suggesting that money will be tight this festive period. My bet is on unique presents that are lower cost.

I’m pretty sure that we all can make this claim – “I know quite a lot about Adsense”. This of course will be true in a certain context. For example when you are talking to an outsider, someone who doesn’t apply adsense to his or her website, then yes, you will know quite a lot about adsense. But on a level playing field sat next to another adsense fanatic, could you make the same claim?

Adsense and Keywords

I need to start with an analogy to explain the importance of keywords. Your selection of keywords is the ‘heart of your business’ as far as adsense income is determined. The heart, yes the most important organ of your body, not your leg or your wrist, but your heart. If your heart is failing, putting a bandage on your wrist isn’t going to work.

So here is the crunch… If your adsense income has dropped or you need to build an adsense business, then look after your heart. It is the life blood of the system, it pumps the money into your adsense account.

It has taken a few hard lessons for me to understand this principle. This is how I felt the pump, pump, pump send a light bulb moment to my brain. It started when the town I live in lost the internet connection. Phew… I’m sure that everyone has lost a connection for as little as ten minutes and thought their world had ended. But I lost the internet connection for three days. I got on with other stuff as you do, but what I did do is re-read some of the books I had purchased.

Of course, years on from getting more knowledge, to re-read an ebook generally is boring; and most of it was, but I kept stumbling, pausing and contemplating on the keyword section of the ebooks. If keywords are the heart of a business you need to dedicate more time and effort to keep them healthy.

If you are starting out, use the system below. If you already have adsense websites and the income has dropped, you need to be aware that trends change and the keyword you chose a year ago may not be the major one being searched for today. Go through this procedure and add another 250 pages.

We all use the keyword tools available and knock up a 5,000 keyword list in half an hour, spend another hour sifting through and choosing our prime keywords. That’s it we’re done. But… would you take an hour and a half to mould and create a heart and expect to live beyond a few months?

Once your website is up and running, I would guess you must spend 2 or 3 hours a day trying to get traffic to your website. This effort could be a little wasted if your keyword choice is hurried.

Here is the best way to choose keywords to maximize your search engine positions. Let’s assume that you need 250 keywords. Up to 50 of those should be first tier. These should include all the main associated keywords and most important should be ‘high’ paying keywords too. These you can check through either the free Google Keyword Tool or through varying software keyword tools.

These first 50 keywords will be the fiercely competed words and as a consequence you’ll not rank very high for them initially. Yet long term, the optimization, the blogs, social networking and bookmarking should help rise those 50 web pages nearer the top of the search rankings.

The other 200 keywords you choose will be ‘long tail keywords’. You may start with a 1,000 to sift through to finish up with 200. First you need to check each keyword separately. Allocate a day to do this, because the effort you put in now will serve you well. The purpose of checking as I’m going to mention is so that you get onto the front page of Google as soon as the search engines crawl your deep inside pages.

The first thing to check is if that long tail keyword gets traffic each month. Between 50 to 500 hits per month is fine for long tail keywords. Above those hits per month and you’ll probably find that too many other websites are competing for that keyword. Below that amount and you may find the quantity of hits vary from a few hits a month to zero hits.

Once you have a selection that meet the first criteria, then you need to check the competing sites. Is there 2,000 or is there 8? To do this you need to put this search query into Google – inurl:my-keywords – replacing my-keywords with your own of course. Use both variations, with dashes separating the words and without dashes. Make a note of the total of competing websites. Once you gone through them all you can make a decision on which keywords are going to get you on the front page of Google.

Even if your web page isn’t optimized too well, if there are only 8 competing websites, you’ll appear on the front page. This will mean a steady but small flow of traffic 50 to 500 hits per month. Multiply that by the sites with long tail keywords and the minimum you could expect, once the search engines have listed the inner pages, is 200 x 50 = 10,000.

There are also other options to consider if you are adding web pages slowly. Use in the Google search box “allintitle: and allinanchor: keyword”. Extra work, but will pay off in the long run.

A reasonable time limit to expect all 250 pages listed in Google, so long as you’ve done the necessary blogging or bookmarking, should be 4 to 6 weeks; it can be done quicker but more work is involved.

Don’t just rely on Google, you’ll need to submit your site to other major engines as well. Plus if you are by chance one of eight on that first Google page, you’ll need to make sure that your description tag is better than all the other tags on that Google page, as they often use that tag to display to content of the site.

10,000 possible hits per month within the first 10 weeks, not bad for a beginner… Realistically if you shared that with the other sites, you may only get 2,000 visitors enter your site per month, but that is still good. Of course… the visitor who clicks your web site link is relatively targeted by this stage and your conversion rate for clicking on adsense ads could be between 10 to 20%. 10% of 2,000 clicks is 200, which could be worth $50 to $200. The day’s work you spent on sifting these keywords has paid for itself. Then you can expect more of the same the following month. As many adsense professionals have 5 to 20 websites, multiply the expected earning by the websites and suddenly you can see the potential, and I may add this is before you start trying to get traffic. Glory days… if you get the job done right.

Home Based Business

I've put together a lot of these ideas from thousands of hours discussing businesses for sale with their owners. They've shared with me how their businesses operate, how they make money online, how they built their businesses up etc. They've given me access to their traffic stats, their earnings and accounts and tax figures.

Ebay home business - You could run an ebay store. You'll need some products to sell. The easiest are ebooks that people download so you don't have inventory. Have a look through Clickbank or Ebay Pulse to get things going.

Your own internet home business - Why not run your own website? You can still promote click bank products from your home business...
